At one time sunrooms were present in the majority of homes. Many people believed that these types of rooms could benefit their health both physically and mentally. If you are not fortunate enough to own an older home with a sunroom or solarium, as it was often referred to, you can have a sunroom added on to your existing home. One of the first things you need to decide before looking at room plans or hiring a contractor is what type of sunroom design you desire. You should carefully plan and discuss with your family specific factors such as how often the room will be used, do you want a formal or casual look, should the walls be completely make of glass or do you prefer knee walls instead, what materials will the ceiling be made of, and most importantly where the room will be located.

A sunroom design should both satisfy your home decorating tastes and meet the needs it was intended for. If you have a large family that includes both children and pets, it probably is not in your best interest to choose a sunroom design that is very formal or flooring that is not easy to clean and care for. Consider you individual family needs when choosing a type of sunroom design.

The type of sunroom design you choose will also greatly affect your costs. For example, if you desire a room that is composed almost entirely of glass, expect to pay more for the project. Many homeowners desire a sunroom that contains a glass roof or skylights. Again expect to pay more when adding these features to your sunroom

Before deciding upon a specific type of sunroom design, look at all of the options that are available. For instance, you will want to decide what type of entry way you desire for your sunroom. You can choose a traditional door, sliding door, or French doors to compliment the look of your new room. Also, consider the issue of windows. If your walls are not composed of mainly all glass, do you want windows that you are able to open? Do you live in a very warm climate where screens may be a good option for the summer months? All of these things should be considered when planning your sunroom design. Be carefully thinking out the design of your room, you are more likely to be satisfied with the end results.
